Showcase Sunday #11

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme hosted by Vicki at Books, Biscuits and Tea. Its aim is to showcase our newest books or book related swag and to see what everyone else received for review, borrowed from libraries, bought in bookshops and downloaded onto eReaders this week.
Purchased:
Fortune's Pawn (Paradox, #1) by Rachel Bach
I'm making an effort to read more adult fiction and also more science fiction, and can I just say that this sounds fantastic and like a lot of fun. Interstellar shenanigans and a cocky mercenary being compared to Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck are bound to get my attention. The few reviews I have read of this novel have been overwhelmingly positive. Hopefully I can get to this one soon!
Night Creatures trilogy (Burn Bright, Angel Arias, and Shine Light) by Marianne de Pierres
I know this series has received some mixed reviews, but just look at those covers. It sounds like some sort of supernatural dystopia and was written by an Australian author. I suppose my reason for purchasing these is a combination of everything mentioned above, and also that they were all available for free. These were all free a few months ago and I missed them, so I was happy to find that happened again.
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
I don't know much about this other than it's an adult fantasy about (you guessed it) a golem and a jinni. And thanks to Elizabeth Knox's Dreamhunter duet, I know what a golem is. This sounds like it may be historical fantasy taking place in New York around the turn of the 20th century? Also, this was super cheap for Kindle so I'm willing to give it a go.

Borrowed:
Sex & Violence by Carrie Mesrobian
I actually downloaded this at the very end of December but forgot to include it in last month's Showcase Sunday post. I was showing a friend how to download library ebooks to a Kindle or other e-reading device and happened upon this one. I read this as part of Bout of Books, and it was surprisingly good. Much better than I was anticipating a book told from a teen guy's perspective about sex and violence to be. Review to come.
These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
I totally gave into the hype here, and I'm happy that I did. This may not be the best science fiction book out there, or the best romance, but it's entertaining nonetheless. It is a compelling read and I'm anxiously awaiting the next two installments in this series. Review to come.
Nowhere But Home by Liza Palmer
On my quest to read more adult fiction, I decided to give this one a shot. The premise doesn't exactly grab me, but so many book blogger friends have absolutely adored this story that I'm curious. Here's hoping I love it as much as so many others seem to!
A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller
I'm always on the lookout for good historical fiction to read, and as a bonus this is also a YA debut. A protagonist with a love of art, Edwardian England, and the suffragette movement all in one book? Sounds just perfect for me. Planning on starting this one soon!
Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick
I was vaguely interested in reading this book back when it was published last year, but never got around to reading it myself. It was just awarded the 2014 Printz Award, however, and so now seems like a pretty good time to give this story about star-crossed lovers meeting again and again over the centuries a try.

Please let me know what books you've recently acquired!

Amanda

Amanda loves few things better than sitting down with a cup of tea and a book. She frequently stays up far too late, telling herself she just needs to finish one more page. When she's not wrapped up in the stories of others, Amanda works as a children's librarian in a public library.

    1. These Broken Stars was really good - quite a bit better than I was expecting, to be honest. I love it when that happens. :) I liked Sex & Violence quite a bit too. The others are still waiting for me to read them, but hopefully soon! And I'll also be sure to let you know on Locke Lamora when I actually get around to finishing that doorstopper haha.
