Bout of Books 10

It's time for another Bout of Books! I love how Bout of Books always seems to occur at a time when I can really devote my spare time to doing little more than reading. It's been super convenient like that for me. It won't be quite as convenient this week, but I think I can make it work.

For a recap of what Bout of Books is:
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 12th and runs through Sunday, May 18th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 10 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

My reading options for this week include:
Something Real by Heather Demetrios
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
And We Stay by Jenny Hubbard
Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King
Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard (I already started this one and it needs to be finished before Friday.)
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

These are nearly all YA contemporaries, and for good reason. I find that YA contemporaries are generally faster reads and much easier to process. I love worldbuilding in speculative fiction (along with many of its other elements), but if I'm going for speed (and enjoyment at the same time), then contemporaries are better suited for this challenge for me.

I'm going to be ambitious and attempt to get through 4 of these books. In addition to working full-time, I'm most likely attending a baseball game on Tuesday night (go Brewers!) and have festivities for my brother's college graduation on both Saturday and Sunday. But what's the point of setting goals that are easy to achieve? And maybe this time I'll even interact with other Bout of Book-ers through challenges and twitter chats.

Please let me know if you’re participating in the current Bout of Books as well so we can cheer each other on!

Amanda

Amanda loves few things better than sitting down with a cup of tea and a book. She frequently stays up far too late, telling herself she just needs to finish one more page. When she's not wrapped up in the stories of others, Amanda works as a children's librarian in a public library.

    1. Thank you! Aw, that sucks! If this was last week instead of this one, I would have had class stuff left to do as well.
There is another one in August, I think - you should consider participating in that one!

  3. Something Real and Rum Punch are lovely books. I totally get your preference for contemporaries !! The Truth About Forever and And We Stay were not my type of books, I hope it works well for you. Enjoy the baseball night (Go Brewers!!! ) I wish I could participate in Bout of Books, but I'm just back after a month long trip. All I need to do is sleep. Good Luck with it. Perfect books for read-a-thon.

    1. You're the first person I know who's actually read Rum Punch - awesome! Makes me feel slightly better about reading it now haha.
And I'm not sure if all of these are my type of books per se, but they sounds light enough that they're what I need right now, if that makes sense. We will see, though.
And I totally get you, Ini! Glad you're back and looking forward to reading your posts again after you recover from your trip. :)

  4. Good luck! Those books look awesome (I think the only one I've read is Vampire Academy. I'm a HUGE Richelle Mead fan but it's not my fave of her series')

    1. Thank you! I've yet to read anything by Richelle Mead. With the movie having just come out and a Kindle daily deal that made the ebook cheap, I figured it made the most sense to start with this. We'll see what I think of it!

  5. I'm so glad that you're taking part in Bout of Books to Amanda! I'll definitely be cheering for you! And yay for contemporary reads, I agree they seem perfect for read-a-thons. The reviews for Something Real have been pretty amazing, so I hope you end up loving it too! Happy reading! :)

  6. I absolutely adore The Truth About Forever, Amanda, and I'm very curious to see what you think of Something Real as the majority of readers seem to be loving it. Also, enjoy VA! It's quick and fun, though I do feel as if the series loses steam towards the end (but then again, I'm in the minority). Good luck, Amanda, and happy reading! :)

    1. I'm not sure whether I plan on reading VA to the series completion. It depends on how the first one goes. I have heard the first few - first three, maybe? - are the only ones worth reading. We'll see. I'm in no rush to commit to reading a super long series right now. I just have it here if I want a paranormal break from contemporaries.
      Thank you, Keertana! :)

  7. WOW. Good luck with this. I haven't ever done one of these, because reading more than I already do just isn't realistic in my life. But I think an event like this sounds so fun. I really liked The Truth About Forever and Something Real. I hope you enjoy them too! Good luck with The Vampire Academy, curious if you get sucked into that series. I read the whole thing in a week a few years ago. It's very teen angst at first but so addicting.

    1. And that's totally fine. I know that I do slack around all the time doing random things when I *could* be reading, so I just use these read-a-thons as a way to really push myself. But they're definitely not for everyone.
haha I'm not planning to get sucked into the VA series - it will be interesting to see if that ends up happening, though!
      Thanks, Lauren!

  8. Yes, YA contemporaries can read really fast. I would also recommend Vampire Academy. It's not the best book I've ever read, but you fly through the pages :)

    1. That's what I figured. And that's exactly what I wanted for this week. :)
