Waiting on Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights any upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Publication date: September 10, 2013
A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

Or will she just go on living inside somebody else’s fiction? (Goodreads)

I actually have not read anything by Rainbow Rowell (cue the gasps of surprise), but I intend to soon! Both Attachments and Eleanor and Park seem to be universally praised and I really do want to read them both at some point soon. But neither of their synopses pique my interest as much as this one does. I love fan fiction. I read tons of Harry Potter fan fiction back in the day (and even some Final Fantasy and The Sword of Truth ones). I even experimented writing some of my own fan fiction. I've always loved how with fan fiction the fans are invested enough in stories to give themselves some power. Fan fiction is not better than canon, but it sure produces some amusing and fun works. Naturally, I find this premise to be super appealing and can't wait to read it myself!

What are you waiting on?

Amanda

Amanda loves few things better than sitting down with a cup of tea and a book. She frequently stays up far too late, telling herself she just needs to finish one more page. When she's not wrapped up in the stories of others, Amanda works as a children's librarian in a public library.

  5. I haven't read anything by Rainbow Rowell either, Amanda, but I recently picked up Attachments and am looking forward to starting it. I'm not too keen on Eleanor and Park because of the mixed reviews, but this one sounds adorable! :) Great pick!

    1. Attachments definitely sounds more interesting than Eleanor & Park for me as well. Perhaps I'll wait to see what you think about it first.

  6. I have a copy of Eleanor and Park. I just need to read it. This story sounds wonderful! I've never picked up fan fiction but I know there's a lot out there. I have trouble keeping up with regular reading let alone adding more stories to it, lol! Great pick Amanda. :)

    1. Well, this was before I felt the need to read as much regular fiction. Haven't read it now for a while. :) I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Eleanor and Park, Rachel!
