In My Mailbox #8

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren. It's a great way for book bloggers to showcase books and other literary things they've received over the past week.

I haven't received too much these past few weeks, for which I'm grateful. I've been so overwhelmed and stressed recently that reading has taken a backseat to everything else in my life. But perhaps reading some great books will make all the difference!

Purchased:
The Assassin's Curse (The Assassin's Curse, #1) by Cassandra Rose Clarke
Every review I've read of this book is overwhelmingly positive. Assassins and pirates? Well, if I think of assassins as a type of ninja, then this brings together the best of both worlds. Plus the ebook price was very reasonable. Look out for my review next week!
Eon (Eon, #1) and Eona (Eon, #2) by Alison Goodman
I've had my eye on these books for a while. A book with a girl masquerading as a boy in order to fight in an Asian-inspired world? This is totally my kind of book. In fact, I'm so confident that I'll love this series that I actually went ahead and bought physical copies from my local indie bookseller.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
This was a bit of an impulse buy for me, I'll admit it. I'd read a few reviews of it (and even an interview where J.K. Rowling was reading it) and I saw that the Kindle version was on sale. I love everything to do with Greek mythology and have been reading the stories myself for years. I haven't read any Greek mythology-inspired fiction in a while, however, and I still have yet to read The Iliad. But reading this would be a step in the right direction.

Borrowed:
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
I started the audiobook of this, got impatient, and moved on to reading a physical copy for the second half. It's definitely an issues-driven contemporary read, but I ended up really enjoying it. My review is here.
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
One of my good friends recommended this book to me back in August. I've seen a number of positive reviews, but also a few negative ones. Still, I give personal recommendations a lot more weight than I do for any reviews I just read, so I decided that I wanted to give this book a try. I guess this book has been getting a lot of press recently, since I've had it on pre-order from the library and am only now just receiving it. I am eager to see where I fall on the spectrum of liking it.

Let me know what books you've received recently!

Amanda

Amanda loves few things better than sitting down with a cup of tea and a book. She frequently stays up far too late, telling herself she just needs to finish one more page. When she's not wrapped up in the stories of others, Amanda works as a children's librarian in a public library.

  1. Eeeep Eon! I haven't actually read Eon yet but I do own a copy and I'm dyyyying to get started! I also adore the covers. It kind of sucks I like the paperback covers more but I prefer hardbacks in general! Oh well. :P Still super awesome! I hope you love both of the books!

  5. Ahh!! I just read The Assassin's Curse this past week, and that book was just so much FUN! I also keep meaning to read Eon someday (I'm constantly wavering on whether or not I will enjoy it), and have heard such good things about Song of Achilles. I'm one of those who didn't really like Age of Miracles very much, but, I didn't find it painful to read either. It was interesting and well written, just not the right book for me. Happy reading! =)

    1. I agree! Just read it last week as well. And I think you'll like Eon. I do hope you give reading it a shot soonish! I'm not sure how I feel about The Age of Miracles. It's feeling a little touchy right now with Sandy devastating the East Coast and all. But it is beautifully written. Thanks for commenting, Heidi!

  6. Yay, I hope you LOVE The Assassin's Curse! Can't go wrong with a book that starts off with a runaway bride making a getaway on a camel, right? Eon sounds absolutely phenomenal - I just love that it has an Asian inspired feel. And a badass heroine. I haven't actually heard much about The Song of Achilles yet, so I look forward to your review!

    1. The beginning of The Assassin's Curse didn't entice me quite as much as I expected it would. But I did end up very much enjoying it by the end. :) And yes, I have the bar set pretty high for both Eon and The Song of Achilles. My fingers are crossed they live up to my expectations! Thanks for commenting, Aylee!
