Waiting on The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights any upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Publication Date: August 20, 2013
It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others’ minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city—Oxford, erased from the map two centuries ago and now controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly—as soldiers in their army.

Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine—a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut. (Goodreads)
Early reviews have been more-or-less positive. Shannon, a debut author, received an impressive deal. The book has already been optioned for film. Hype for this book is unbelievable. Of course I want to see what it's all about! Plus I seem to have great success with stories where dreams/dreaming plays a significant role. Fingers crossed that I'll enjoy this one!

What are you waiting on?

Amanda

Amanda loves few things better than sitting down with a cup of tea and a book. She frequently stays up far too late, telling herself she just needs to finish one more page. When she's not wrapped up in the stories of others, Amanda works as a children's librarian in a public library.

  2. The hype for this was been so crazy!! I still can't really believe she wrote this when she was nineteen and look at her now (makes me think what I'm doing with my life, haha). I really, really hope you love this one and are not let down by the hype, like I was a bit. It's SUCH an original concept, so I really appreciated that!!

  3. The hype was definitely a bit much for the book - JK Rowling? Yeesh, can anyone but JK Rowling match that? - but I loved it and I hope you will too :). The dreamer aspect is definitely a huge portion of the book, so it sounds like that is a good sign if you've been having a lot of luck with those kind of books. Have you been reading reviews or have you been avoiding those as much as possible because you think you'll read it soon? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, and can't wait to see what you think of it :).

  4. I was also intrigued by the hype surrounding this book Amanda, but I held off in requesting a copy, as I was so overwhelmed by books. But now a lot of bloggers whose opinions I hold in high regard really ended up enjoying this, so I know for sure I must get a copy too. I hope we both end up enjoying this book! Great pick Amanda!
