Miller took a number of risks in this book, which I appreciated but ultimately found I couldn't stand behind.
Maybe you'll enjoy this one more than I do - that's been the case for most other reviewers, I feel like. So if you're interested, you should give it a try! Then we can either commiserate in the fact we both disliked it, or else you can try to convince me of its good qualities. ;)Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03052456915027241479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4160066904665347291.post-54312591271087709142013-09-26T20:08:09.376-05:002013-09-26T20:08:09.376-05:00It is a pretty cover, I'll give you that. Me too - I was looking forward to enjoying this one, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I'm pretty well versed in the Trojan War--so yeah, I wonder if I might be just as critical as you when it comes to this book. That being said, I LOVE that a writer took on Patroclus as the protagonist and narrator--if for no other reason then that it is simply a fresh approach. And brava for examining her and Achilles complicated relationship in full. I was taught that yes, they were indeed lovers, but it was never treated as anything shameful it was simply a testament to their strong bond with each other. I mean come on, we all know those ancient Greek myths and stories are LOADED down with homosexuality along with infidelity, incest, and a host of other somewhat taboo subjects. It's just the way it is. I'm glad that Miller didn't shy away from that topic in her book.

I'm still on the fence about whether I'll read this. But I do think my library carries it so I just may have to give it a try sometime.

Fantastic review:) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07026974627724672435noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4160066904665347291.post-23260020325740947082013-09-16T19:34:36.176-05:002013-09-16T19:34:36.176-05:00I would like to take a minute to bask in the glow ...I would like to take a minute to bask in the glow of that cover. It is seriously one of my favorite book covers ever. I love the colors and I love the bold use of the helmet. That said, I'm sorry that this book didn't work for you overall. It seems like Miller's use of an unconventional narrator spanned over the period of time that she employed just didn't work. Bummer! This review is very thoughtful and I'm not sure I'll pick this book up to read, but I sure would like that cover on my shelf...or hung on my wall. ;)Lauren @ Love is not a trianglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15388832613855107816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4160066904665347291.post-31111178646330329242013-09-16T15:07:56.379-05:002013-09-16T15:07:56.379-05:00I haven't heard of this one and it's a rea...I haven't heard of this one and it's a real shame that you were unable to connect with the characters. Frankly speaking, Greek mythology can sometimes be too heavy-handed for me, so I think I'll be skipping out on this. I absolutely loved it. Truth be told, I'm pretty familiar with the mythology and such, but I think that I found myself so caught up in the story from the beginning that I glossed over the details - I do this all the time. But I did love it quite a bit and I also remember thinking it really interesting the route Miller took. Asheley T.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03908795522290889438noreply@blogger.com
